Plot: (Warning, may contain spoilers):
Published in 1996, "The Gun Seller" is a fast-paced, satirical spy thriller written by the actor and comedian Hugh Laurie. It blends the gritty undercover world of John le Carré with the sharp, self-deprecating wit of P.G. Wodehouse.

The Plot:
The story follows Thomas Lang, a dry-witted, motorcycle-riding former Scots Guard who is currently working as a freelance bodyguard and "hired hand." His life takes a sharp turn toward the absurd and dangerous when he is approached in a Casablanca bar by a man who offers him a massive sum of money to assassinate an American businessman named Alexander Woolf.

Being a fundamentally decent man (despite his cynical exterior), Lang refuses the contract. Instead, he decides to travel to London to warn the intended victim. However, his attempt to do a good deed backfires spectacularly. He quickly finds himself caught in a complex web of international arms dealing, government conspiracies, and high-level espionage.

The Mystery:
As Lang tries to figure out who wants Woolf dead and why, he is interrogated by British Intelligence, chased by mysterious assassins, and seduced by Woolf's beautiful daughter, Sarah. He soon realizes that he is a pawn in a much larger game involving:
The "Sword" Project: A terrifying new high-tech weapon that several governments and private corporations are desperate to control.
The Ministry of Defence: High-ranking officials who may be more interested in profit than national security.
A Group of Terrorists: Who might not be exactly what they seem.

The Investigation:
Lang is forced to go undercover, posing as an arms dealer to infiltrate a shadowy organization. Armed only with his sharp tongue, a stolen identity, and a healthy dose of sarcasm, he must navigate a world where everyone is lying and the stakes are global.

The novel is less about a "whodunnit" and more about a "how-will-he-survive," as Lang moves from London to Switzerland to a final, explosive showdown. He must stop a manufactured terrorist incident designed to drive up the price of military hardware, all while trying to figure out which side of the law he is actually working for.
